City of Orlando, Youth Digital Literacy

Scope of work performed

AAHE designed and delivered youth digital literacy training for the City of Orlando, covering digital literacy fundamentals, cybersecurity awareness, online safety, digital citizenship, responsible technology use, antibullying, and the protection of personal information.

The scope goes well past teaching young people to operate software. It addresses how young people conduct themselves online and how they protect themselves there: recognizing unsafe situations, understanding what personal information is and why it matters, behaving responsibly toward peers in digital spaces, and understanding the permanence and reach of what they post. Antibullying and digital citizenship are integrated into the instruction rather than delivered as a separate assembly, which is the approach that holds up when the material has to be taught to a real classroom of teenagers.

AAHE was responsible for building the curriculum for a youth audience and delivering it, including age appropriate framing of security and safety concepts that are usually written for adults.

Outcome

The City of Orlando received a delivered youth digital literacy and online safety program covering the full range of topics above.

For an evaluator, this engagement demonstrates that AAHE can build and deliver technical and behavioral content for a youth audience under a municipal client, which is a specific and frequently procured capability. Youth digital safety and digital citizenship programming appears regularly in municipal parks and recreation programming, school district partnerships, after school and summer program solicitations, and youth workforce grants, and it is a scope that many training vendors cannot staff credibly.

Taken with the Adult Community Digital Literacy engagement for the same client, this entry also shows that AAHE delivers digital literacy across both the youth and adult populations for a single municipal government, which is the profile an agency looks for when a solicitation spans multiple age groups.

The engagement is directly relevant to requirements for youth digital literacy, online safety and digital citizenship, cybersecurity awareness training, antibullying programming, and the digital skills components of youth workforce and out of school time programs.
