City of Orlando, Adult Community Digital Literacy

Scope of work performed

AAHE designed and delivered community based digital literacy training for adult residents on behalf of the City of Orlando.

The engagement placed instruction directly into the community rather than expecting residents to come to a central training site, which is the delivery model municipal digital inclusion programs generally require in order to reach the residents who most need them. AAHE was responsible for the instructional content, the delivery of the training itself, and the coordination required to run sessions for an adult community audience.

Adult digital literacy instruction differs from classroom technology training in ways that determine whether a program succeeds. Participants arrive with a wide range of starting skill levels, varying comfort with technology, and immediate practical goals such as employment applications, access to public services, and family and household needs. AAHE built and delivered the program for that reality.

Outcome

The City of Orlando received a delivered digital literacy program for adult residents, not a curriculum handoff. AAHE carried the work from instructional design through delivery to a community audience.

For an evaluator, this engagement establishes three things. First, AAHE has performed digital literacy work under a municipal government client, so the reporting expectations and community accountability that come with publicly funded programming are familiar ground. Second, AAHE designs for adult learners in community settings, which is a distinct competency from youth instruction and from corporate training. Third, the firm has direct, relevant past performance for digital inclusion, digital equity, and adult basic skills solicitations, which are among the most commonly funded programs at the municipal and workforce board level.

The engagement is directly relevant to requirements for adult digital literacy, digital inclusion and digital equity programming, community based training delivery, and the digital skills components of adult workforce programs.
